1. Dragon Boat Races: Perhaps the most well-known custom, dragon boat races are boat races in which teams paddle in long boats with dragon-shaped prows. The event commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a ancient Chinese poet, who drowned himself in a river after being exiled.

2. Zongzi (Zongzi dumplings): These are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves and often filled with a variety of sweet or savory fillings. They are eaten during the festival and are considered to ward off evil spirits.

3. Drinking Realgar Wine (Xianfuju): This is a traditional Chinese beverage made from realgar (a toxic arsenic-containing mineral) and wine. It is believed to have medicinal properties and is consumed in small amounts to ward off diseases.

4. Wearing Periwinkle or Calendula (Yuanxiao) Leaves: These leaves are believed to possess protective qualities against evil. People would wear them as charms or include them in their attire.

5. Carrying and Hanging Incense (Chuwan): Incense sticks or powders are carried or hung in homes to ward off bad spirits and bring good luck.

6. Applying Chongzi Paste on the Forehead: This is a custom for children, where a paste made from soot and sesame oil is applied to the child's forehead. The soot is believed to keep evil spirits away, while the sesame oil is thought to be a preventive measure against insects.

7. Flying Kites: Some people enjoy flying kites during the Dragon Boat Festival, which is said to help keep the dragon spirits from rising too high in the sky.

8. Listening to Music of the Pipa: The pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument, is often associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, and performances are held to honor the festival's history.

9. Eating Five-Spice Rice: Some regions of China have the custom of eating a meal that includes five different spices, which symbolize the five flavors and the five cardinal virtues.

These customs vary by region and over time, but they all contribute to the rich tapestry of tradition that makes the Dragon Boat Festival a meaningful and enjoyable celebration for many in China and among Chinese communities worldwide.
