The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It falls on April 4 or 5 of the Gregorian calendar each year, corresponding to the 15th day of the third lunar month. The festival has a long history and is filled with rich cultural significance.

**Origin of Qingming Festival:**

The Qingming Festival has its roots in ancient Chinese agricultural customs. It was originally a day to honor ancestors and to pay respects to the deceased. During the Spring and Autumn period (770-476 BC), the people of China began to hold ceremonies to honor their ancestors and gods of the land. By the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), the Qingming Festival had evolved into a day for tomb-sweeping, where people would visit the graves of their ancestors to offer food, flowers, and incense.

**Legends of Qingming Festival:**

There are several legends associated with the Qingming Festival. One of the most famous is the story of Jie Zitui, a loyal minister during the Spring and Autumn period. According to the legend, Jie Zitui once saved the life of his king by jumping into a fire. In gratitude, the king granted him a wish. Jie Zitui asked for the king to have a day off to honor his ancestors. Since then, the Qingming Festival has been celebrated as a day to pay respects to ancestors.

Another well-known legend is about the poet Du Mu. During the Tang Dynasty, Du Mu was traveling during the Qingming Festival. He wrote a poem about the festival, which includes the line "The willows sway in the breeze, the rain falls softly, it's the Qingming Festival, and the world is weeping." This poem has become a symbol of the Qingming Festival and is still recited today.

**Customs of Qingming Festival:**

The Qingming Festival is characterized by several customs, including:

1. Tomb-sweeping: Families visit the graves of their ancestors to clean the tombstones, offer food, and burn incense.

2. Flying kites: Kite-flying is a popular activity during the Qingming Festival, believed to help release the souls of the deceased.

3. Eating cold food: It is traditional to eat cold food during the Qingming Festival, as a way to honor the deceased.

4. Wearing willow branches: Willow branches are often worn on the head or carried as a sign of respect for the Qingming Festival.

The Qingming Festival is a time for reflection and remembrance, as well as a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of China.
