#### Origin of the Spring Festival

The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. Its origin can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC - 1046 BC). Initially, it was celebrated to mark the end of the winter solstice, a time when people felt they had survived the coldest part of the year and could look forward to the warmer weather. Over time, it became a festival to honor the beginning of a new year in the Chinese lunar calendar.

#### Customs of the Spring Festival

On New Year's Eve, families come together to have a grand dinner, also known as the "Reunion Dinner." It symbolizes the gathering of family members after a year apart. The menu usually includes auspicious dishes, such as dumplings, fish (symbolizing surplus), and longevity noodles.

**2. Setting Off Fireworks:**

Fireworks and firecrackers are set off at midnight to ward off evil spirits and invite good luck for the coming year.

**3. Dressing in New Clothes:**

It is customary for people to wear new clothes on New Year's Day to symbolize a fresh start.

#### Legends of the Spring Festival

The Nian is a legendary beast that appeared in ancient China, attacking people at the turn of the year. According to folklore, the villagers were able to protect themselves by wearing red, setting off fireworks, and using bamboo sticks. Today, this story is celebrated as a way to ward off evil spirits and usher in good fortune.

**2. Kitchen God:**

The Kitchen God is a deity who oversaw the family's kitchen and was believed to report to the gods on the family's behavior throughout the year. On New Year's Eve, families would clean their kitchens and offer food and drinks to the Kitchen God before he returned to the heavens. It is said that by pleasing the Kitchen God, families would receive blessings for the coming year.

**3. Jade Emperor:**

According to Chinese mythology, the Jade Emperor is the ruler of heaven. During the Spring Festival, it is believed that the Jade Emperor descends to earth to distribute blessings to the people. Offering prayers to the Jade Emperor is one way to ensure good luck for the year.
