One of the most significant activities on Chuxi is the preparation of the family's reunion dinner. This meal is often the largest and most elaborate of the year, with a variety of dishes symbolizing prosperity and good luck. Common dishes include dumplings, which represent wealth due to their shape resembling ancient Chinese money; fish, which signifies abundance and prosperity; and nian gao, a sticky rice cake that symbolizes growth and height.

As the evening progresses, families gather around the table to enjoy the feast, sharing stories and laughter. The atmosphere is one of warmth and joy, as everyone looks forward to the upcoming year. Children are often given red envelopes, or hongbao, filled with money as a symbol of good fortune and blessings.

Another key activity on Chuxi is the cleaning of the home. It is believed that sweeping away the old and cleaning the house thoroughly will bring in good luck for the new year. This tradition is known as "sweeping away the evil" or "sweeping away the old year." Families will often burn incense and paper offerings to honor their ancestors and deities, ensuring their protection and guidance throughout the year.

As the night deepens, the streets come alive with the sound of fireworks and firecrackers. These are set off to ward off evil spirits and to invite in the new year's blessings. The air is filled with the vibrant colors and loud noises, creating an atmosphere of excitement and festivity.

One of the most iconic Chuxi activities is the hanging of red lanterns and couplets. Red, being the color of happiness and good fortune in Chinese culture, is used extensively. Red lanterns are strung up around the home and in public spaces, while couplets, which are pairs of poetic lines written on red paper, are displayed on doors and walls. These couplets often contain wishes for health, prosperity, and happiness for the coming year.

In some regions, families may also participate in the custom of "watching the god of the kitchen" or "watching the god of the kitchen god." This involves leaving a bowl of food and a cup of tea for the kitchen god, who is believed to return to heaven on Chuxi to report to the Jade Emperor on the family's behavior throughout the year. By watching over the food, it is thought that the family can ensure the god's safe journey back to heaven.

As the night comes to a close, families gather to watch the Spring Festival Gala, a television program that features a variety of performances, including songs, dances, and comedy acts. This event is a highlight of the evening, bringing the family together to share in the joy and laughter of the New Year.

Chuxi, with its rich tapestry of traditions and customs, is a night filled with anticipation and celebration. It is a time when families come together, honor their ancestors, and look forward to the year ahead with hope and optimism. Through these activities, the spirit of the Spring Festival is brought to life, ensuring that the new year will be filled with happiness and prosperity.
