The True Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival for Children

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is an important traditional holiday in China. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, usually in June.
Here is a simple story about how this special festival started:
Long, long ago, there was a great poet and scholar named Qu Yuan. He was very loyal to his country, but unfortunately, his country was in trouble. The king did not listen to him, and Qu Yuan felt very sad.
One day, the king's enemies took over the country, and Qu Yuan was very, very sad. He decided to jump into the river to end his life. The people of the country were very, very sorry for Qu Yuan.
To remember him, the people had a big race in a dragon-shaped boat. They used to race in rivers, and they beat drums and played flutes to scare the fish away from Qu Yuan's body. They also threw sticky rice balls into the water to feed the fish, so they wouldn't eat Qu Yuan's body.
The Dragon Boat Festival is now a special time to remember Qu Yuan and to enjoy fun activities. People eat sticky rice balls, race dragon boats, and wear a kind of leaf called "cangqu" to keep insects away from their skin.
So, the Dragon Boat Festival is all about remembering a great person and having fun together!
