The Double Ninth Festival, also known as Chongyang Festival, is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month. It has its origins in ancient Chinese mythology and has several legends surrounding it.

One popular story is about the immortality-seeking仙鹤 (xianhe) and the nine herbs. According to this tale, there was an old man named 岳飞 (Yue Fei) who was trying to find the elixir of immortality. He discovered a place where there were nine kinds of herbs that were believed to grant eternal life. However, he fell asleep while waiting for the herbs to be ready. When he woke up, a white crane (which is a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture) had eaten all the herbs, leaving him with only the crane's bones. Since then, the Double Ninth Festival has become associated with longevity and the worship of cranes.

Another legend is connected to the famous philosopher and writer 庄周 (Zhuang Zhou), also known as Chuang Tzu. The story goes that on the Double Ninth day, Chuang Tzu had a dream where he transformed into a butterfly, flying freely in the sky. The next morning, when he woke up, he wasn't sure if he was Chuang Tzu or the butterfly. This dream gave rise to the concept of transformation and change, and the Double Ninth Festival became a time to appreciate the beauty of nature and the cyclical changes of life.

Today, the Double Ninth Festival is celebrated with various customs and activities. Elderly people often wear chrysanthemum flowers, believed to help prevent illnesses and enhance longevity. Families gather to enjoy the autumn scenery, make chrysanthemum tea, and sometimes even climb mountains, as climbing on the ninth day is considered to be especially auspicious.
