After King Zhongshu became the ruler, he wanted to show his gratitude to Jie Zitui, who had helped him, but Jie Zitui preferred to live in seclusion. When King Zhongshu learned that Jie Zitui was hiding in the mountains, he ordered a fire to be set to force him down. Unfortunately, Jie Zitui remained steadfast and was burned to death. King Zhongshu was deeply grieved and ordered that the day be observed without fire, only cold food, in memory of Jie Zitui. This tradition eventually evolved into the Qingming Festival.
