**Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival:**

The most widely accepted legend of the Dragon Boat Festival is about Qu Yuan, a talented poet and statesman during the Warring States period (475-221 BC) of ancient China. According to the story, Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who was falsely accused and exiled by the king. In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. The local people were in great sorrow and launched a search for his body. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice dumplings into the river. To ward off the evil spirits, they also raced dragon-shaped boats.

Another legend about the Dragon Boat Festival is related to the famous general, Zhong Kui. It is said that he was defeated by a monster and drowned in the river. His friends and villagers held a dragon boat race to honor his memory and to protect the people from the monster.

2. Eating Zongzi: Zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings, are another essential aspect of the Dragon Boat Festival. These dumplings are wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with various ingredients like pork, beans, or red bean paste. They are believed to be a way to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body.

3. Hanging Calamus: The Chinese character for calamus, a type of aromatic herb, looks like a dragon. During the festival, people hang calamus in their homes to ward off evil spirits and to bring good fortune.

4. Wearing Periwinkle Leaves: Periwinkle leaves are believed to have protective properties against diseases and evil spirits. People wear them on their heads or around their necks during the festival.

5. Drinking Realgar Wine: Realgar is a type of ore that is used to make traditional Chinese medicine. It is believed that drinking realgar wine can prevent diseases and improve health.
