The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its origins are rooted in the memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period, who drowned himself in the Miluo River after being betrayed and unable to save his kingdom. The festival is marked by dragon boat races in his honor, as well as eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and hanging medicinal herbs to ward off evil spirits.
