The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. There are three main legends about its origin.

The first legend is about Qu Yuan, a loyal minister during the Warring States period. When he was betrayed and exiled, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. Local people raced in boats to save him, but it was too late. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice into the river. This became the custom of eating zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves.
The second legend is about the god of water, Yu the Great. He was said to have controlled the floods and saved the people. To honor him, people would hold dragon boat races and offer sacrifices to the river gods.
The third legend is about a monster called the "Wu Sangui." It was said to come out of the river and harm people. To protect themselves, people would decorate their homes with mugwort and calamus, and wear a jade amulet. They would also race dragon boats to scare the monster away.
These legends have been passed down through generations, and the Dragon Boat Festival continues to be celebrated with various customs and activities.
