The Qixi Festival, also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day, is an important traditional festival celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. It is deeply rooted in Chinese mythology and has become an occasion for romantic couples to express their love and admiration.

**Origin:**

The festival originated from the legendary love story of the cowherd and the weaving maid. According to the tale, there were once a cowherd named Niulang and a weaving maid named Zhinu. They fell in love and were destined to be together. However, the Emperor separated them by ordering a river to divide the sky, thus preventing them from meeting. The only way they could reunite was on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, when the magpies would form a bridge across the Milky Way for them to cross.

**Customs:**

1. **Romeo and Juliet's Pillow (织女穿针)**: Young women would try to thread a needle through a hole while blindfolded to test their needlework skills and, by extension, their luck in finding a husband.

2. **Hanging the Clothes on the Weaving Maid's Clothesline (牛郎织女鹊桥会)**: Couples would go out on this night and hang their clothes on a clothesline or tree branch in the hope that the magpies would carry their wishes to the stars.

3. **Eating Qixi Noodles (乞巧面)**: In some areas, people eat long noodles on the evening of the festival to symbolize longevity and happiness.

4. **Making Paper Cuttings (剪纸)**: Young girls would create paper cuttings in the shapes of hearts, flowers, or the cowherd and weaving maid in the hope of finding a good husband or wife.

5. **Stargazing**: Couples would go outside and look for the brightest stars in the sky to see if they could spot the magpies forming the bridge for the cowherd and weaving maid.

6. **Listening to Love Stories**: It is customary to share love stories and tales of the festival to deepen the understanding of its romantic essence.

The Qixi Festival, with its rich history and customs, remains a cherished tradition in China, especially for those in romantic relationships.
