The Qixi Festival, also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day, is an important traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, often corresponding to early August. Its origin and legend date back more than 2000 years ago during the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Origin:

According to ancient legends, the Qixi Festival is derived from the love story between 牛郎 (Niu Lang) and 织女 (Zhi Nü), the cowherd and the weaver girl. Niu Lang was a poor cowherd who lived on the ground, while Zhi Nü was the daughter of a celestial emperor and a skilled weaver who lived in the heavenly realm. The two were deeply in love, but their love was forbidden by the heavenly court, and they were kept apart by a river.

According to another legend, the emperor was against the match, so he ordered the Nili River, which separated the two, to become too wide for them to cross. The gods were moved by their love, and allowed a magical bridge called the "Bamboo Bridge" to appear on the Qixi night every year for just one night. Niu Lang would then use his bamboo staff as a horse and ride across the bridge to be with his beloved.

In some versions of the story, the bridge was formed by magpies flying across the river, creating a natural bridge that would allow the lovers to meet for one night each year. The act of people making paper cranes on Qixi Festival night symbolizes this belief and is a popular activity for couples and family members.

Legends:

1. Niu Lang and Zhi Nü: As mentioned above, the story of Niu Lang and Zhi Nü is the main legend behind the Qixi Festival. It embodies the idea that love can conquer all obstacles, and it encourages young couples to persevere in the face of adversity.

2. Magpies' love: Some stories claim that when magpies learn about Niu Lang and Zhi Nü's love story, they form themselves into a bridge to help the lovers reunite.

3. Seven sisters: The Qixi Festival is also associated with the myth of the Seven Sisters, or Weaver Maidens. It is believed that on Qixi night, the Seven Sisters come down from heaven to help Zhi Nü repair celestial clothing with magical threads.

The Qixi Festival has long been a day of romance, celebrating love and hope, and it is filled with various romantic activities, such as making dumplings (in remembrance of Zhi Nü weaving clothing), enjoying sweet treats, and giving gifts to loved ones. The festival has been celebrated for thousands of years and remains a significant cultural and traditional event in modern China.
