The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is an important traditional festival in China, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It has a long history and is steeped in various customs and legends.

**Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival:**

There are several legends surrounding the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival, with the most popular one being related to the poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a government official during the Warring States period of China. Known for his loyalty and wisdom, he was unjustly exiled by the king. Faced with the corruption and decline of his country, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The local people, in their sorrow, raced out in boats to search for his body, while throwing rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to feed the fish and prevent them from disturbing the poet's body.

Another legend involves the ancient emperor Yan Emperor (Shu Di), who was said to have fallen into a dragon river after his death. The local people paddled out in dragon-shaped boats to rescue him, and the festival has since been celebrated to honor his memory.

**Customs of the Dragon Boat Festival:**

1. Dragon Boat Racing: The most well-known custom is dragon boat racing, which involves teams of rowers paddling a long, narrow boat decorated like a dragon. The boat is steered by a helmsman, and drummers encourage the rowers with rhythmic beats.

2. Eating Zongzi: Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, and they are one of the signature foods of the Dragon Boat Festival. They are believed to have been thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating the body of Qu Yuan.

3. Hanging Calamus: Calamus (or mugwort) and cups are hung in front doors and windows to ward off illness and evil spirits. They are often paired with cinnamon and other aromatic herbs for protection.

4. Wearing Periwinkle (Yuehua) Leaves: People also wear periwinkle leaves, which are believed to be able to prevent diseases and evil.

5. Listening to Qiongqi Music: Some regions of China have the custom of listening to the sounds of a wooden tube, called qiongqi, which is believed to drive away evil spirits.

6. Dragon Boat Festival Poems: During the festival, people recite ancient poems and verses to pay tribute to Qu Yuan and other historical figures.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for families to gather, honor their ancestors, and partake in the vibrant customs that have been passed down through generations.
