According to the story, a statesman named Jie Zitui, who had given up his throne for the good of his people, was cremated after he had criticized the king for his tyranny. The king's son, Duke Huan, wanted to appease his father's spirit, so he held a grand ceremony to sweep his tomb on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, which is the origin of the Qingming Festival.

**Customs of Qingming Festival:**

1. Tomb Sweeping: This is the most important activity during the Qingming Festival. Families visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. They sweep the tombs, clean the gravestones, and offer food, paper money, joss sticks, and other items in honor of the deceased.

2. Offering Food: It is customary to prepare special dishes and offer them to the ancestors. These dishes may include meat, rice, fruits, and drinks. It's believed that the ancestors enjoy the offerings and will bring good fortune to the living.

3. Lighting Lanterns: On the night before or the day of Qingming, families often gather together to light lanterns and release them into the sky. This is believed to light the way for the spirits of the ancestors.
