**Origin of Qingming Festival:**

The Qingming Festival has a long history, with roots dating back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC). It was initially associated with agricultural rituals, marking the time to begin spring planting. Over time, it evolved into a day to honor the ancestors.

The festival is believed to be founded on a story from the Spring and Autumn Annals, a historical text. According to the story, a statesman named Jie Zitui, who had given up his throne for the good of his people, was cremated after he had criticized the king for his tyranny. His spirit was believed to be unhappy and angry after his death. The king's son, Duke Huan, wanted to appease his father's spirit, so he held a grand ceremony to sweep his tomb on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, which is the origin of the Qingming Festival.

**Customs of Qingming Festival:**

1. Tomb Sweeping: This is the most important activity during the Qingming Festival. Families visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects. They sweep the tombs, clean the gravestones, and offer food, paper money, joss sticks, and other items in honor of the deceased.

2. Offering Food: It is customary to prepare special dishes and offer them to the ancestors. These dishes may include meat, rice, fruits, and drinks. It's believed that the ancestors enjoy the offerings and will bring good fortune to the living.

3. Lighting Lanterns: On the night before or the day of Qingming, families often gather together to light lanterns and release them into the sky. This is believed to light the way for the spirits of the ancestors.

4. Walking in Nature: Since the Qingming Festival marks the beginning of spring, it is common for people to go for walks in the countryside to enjoy the beauty of nature. This custom is known as "sweeping the tombs with the wind and rain."

5. Dragon and Lion Dances: In some areas, dragon and lion dances are performed to entertain the spirits and to bring good luck.

6. Flying Kites: In northern China, flying kites is a popular Qingming Festival activity. It is believed that flying kites can ward off evil spirits.

The Qingming Festival is not only a time for honoring the deceased but also a time to appreciate life and the beauty of nature. It is a significant cultural tradition in China and is still celebrated with great reverence and enthusiasm.
