The Qixi Festival, also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day, is one of the most romantic and traditional festivals in China. Celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, it has a rich history and various customs that are still cherished today. Below are some of the main traditional customs associated with the Qixi Festival.

1. Star-gazing

The most iconic custom of the Qixi Festival is star-gazing. According to folklore, on this night, the god of love, Hou Yi, rides his chariot across the sky with his wife, the celestial maiden, Vega. Couples all over China would gather and look at the stars, especially the two brightest ones that symbolize the lovers, Vega and Altair. They would wish for a happy and harmonious relationship just like that of the god and his wife.

2. Sending love letters

On the Qixi Festival, young lovers would write love letters to express their affection for each other. These letters, known as "qixi letters," would be exchanged under the moonlight. This custom is a reminder of the strong connection between love and the night sky, and it's a time for couples to deepen their bond.

3. Eating qingming cake

Another custom of the Qixi Festival is eating qingming cake, also known as "matchmaker cake." This sweet rice cake is said to have the power to bring together two hearts. It's believed that sharing this cake with a special someone will increase their chances of finding true love.

4. Making and offering qixi paper decorations

On the Qixi Festival, people would make paper decorations, including paper lanterns, stars, and heart shapes, and hang them on their windows and doors. These decorations symbolize the wish for love, happiness, and good fortune in their lives.

5. Qixi drama performances

Traditional Chinese drama performances, especially those based on the Qixi story, are also an integral part of the festival. People would gather in temples or community centers to watch these performances, which are often accompanied by music and singing.

6. Offering sacrifices to the Qixi couple

In some regions, people would offer sacrifices to the Qixi couple, including fruits, tea, and incense, at altars in temples or at home. This is done in the hope that the gods will bless their relationships and grant their wishes for love and happiness.

The Qixi Festival, with its beautiful legends and heartfelt customs, continues to be a symbol of love and romance in China. As the festival continues to evolve, these traditional customs remain a testament to the enduring power of love and its connection to the celestial world.
