In my family, we celebrate the New Year with traditional customs and festive activities. Here's a glimpse into how we spend the Chinese New Year, which is often referred to as "Little New Year" or "Chuxi" in Chinese.

1. Cleaning the house: Just like many other Chinese families, we start the New Year by thoroughly cleaning our home to sweep away any bad luck and welcome in good fortune. It's believed that this tradition will bring a prosperous and healthy year.
2. Decorations: We adorn our home with red lanterns, couplets (pairs of vertical red scrolls with good wishes written on them), and paper cuttings of animals and symbols representing prosperity, happiness, and longevity. These decorations are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
3. Setting up the Altar: We create an altar to honor our ancestors and deities. It includes offerings like fruits, candies, tea, and incense sticks. The altar is believed to connect us with our ancestors, who guide our lives and protect us.
4. Reunion dinner: The evening of the New Year's Eve is all about family. We gather together to enjoy a delicious feast that typically includes dishes like fish (for prosperity), dumplings (to represent gold ingots), and long noodles (to symbolize longevity).
5. Fireworks and firecrackers: In the evening, we light fireworks and set off firecrackers to ward off evil spirits and invite good luck. The loud bangs and bright lights are a part of the excitement and celebration.
6. Wearing new clothes: We wear new clothes on New Year's Day to signify a fresh start. It's also common to wear red, which is considered a lucky color.
7. Giving red envelopes: Younger family members receive red envelopes, also known as hongbao, containing money from elders as a symbol of good wishes and luck.
8. Traditional performances: We might watch or participate in traditional performances, such as dragon dances, lion dances, and lantern shows, which are believed to bring good luck and joy.
These are some of the ways we celebrate the Little New Year in my family. It's a time of joy, togetherness, and the anticipation of a prosperous new year ahead.
