The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its origins can be traced back to the 3rd century BC, when it was established to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a loyal minister of the Chu Kingdom.

One of the most popular legends about the festival is that Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River after being betrayed and exiled by his king. Local people raced in dragon boats to save him, and they threw rice dumplings into the river to keep fish from eating his body. This is why dragon boat races and eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) are integral to the festival.

Another legend suggests that the festival was created to ward off evil spirits. People would wear a medicinal herb called mugwort, hang calamus leaves, and drink realgar wine to protect themselves from diseases.

The Dragon Boat Festival is also a time to honor the goddess of the river, Mama Die. People would offer sacrifices and perform rituals to ensure the safety of the river and to prevent accidents.

In summary, the Dragon Boat Festival has a rich history and is celebrated through various customs and traditions, all of which are deeply rooted in Chinese culture and history.
