The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Its origins can be traced back to the Warring States period, over 2,000 years ago.

The festival is believed to honor Qu Yuan, a loyal minister of the state of Chu during the Warring States period. Qu Yuan was betrayed and exiled by his king, and eventually drowned himself in the Miluo River in despair. To prevent fish from eating his body, local people threw rice into the river. This practice later evolved into the custom of eating zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves.
Another legend associated with the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat race. It is said that the race originated to honor the brave men who paddled their boats out to save Qu Yuan from drowning. The dragon boat race has since become a major event during the festival, with teams racing long, narrow boats adorned with dragon heads and tails.
The Dragon Boat Festival also involves various other customs, such as hanging calamus and mugwort to ward off evil spirits, and wearing a five-color thread bracelet for good luck. This vibrant and colorful festival is a time for families to gather, honor their ancestors, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of China.
