The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday that falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. It is believed to have originated during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), but its roots can be traced back even further to the ancient Chinese moon worship.

The festival is celebrated to honor the moon and to express gratitude for the harvest. It is a time for family reunions, as people gather to enjoy the full moon, eat mooncakes, and share stories. The full moon of the Mid-Autumn Festival is considered the brightest and roundest of the year, symbolizing completeness and harmony.

The festival is also associated with the legendary story of Chang'e, the Moon Goddess, who is said to have ascended to the moon after consuming an elixir of immortality. According to the tale, her husband, Hou Yi, shot down the nine suns that were causing chaos on Earth, and in gratitude, the gods gave him the elixir. However, Chang'e accidentally swallowed it and was transported to the moon, where she lives to this day.

Today, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated with various customs and activities, including lighting lanterns, watching the moon, and enjoying mooncakes, which are round pastries filled with sweet or savory fillings.
