The people of Chu state were in great sorrow and threw rice into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. This is how the custom of throwing rice into the river originated.

2. **驱邪避疫 (Drive out evil spirits and prevent diseases):** Another legend is that the Dragon Boat Festival was created to drive away evil spirits and diseases. It is believed that the dragon boat races and the hanging of mugwort and calamus (Chinese herbs) can ward off evil and bring good luck.

3. **纪念伍子胥 (Wu Zixu):** In some regions, the festival is also celebrated to honor Wu Zixu, a loyal minister who was betrayed and drowned himself in the Yangtze River. His spirit is believed to be a dragon, and the dragon boat races are held to honor his memory.
