The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its origins are steeped in various legends and customs, with the most famous being the tale of Qu Yuan.

One of the most widely accepted origins of the Dragon Boat Festival is the story of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period (475-221 BC). Qu Yuan was a loyal minister to the king of the Chu state. However, he was exiled and eventually drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against the corruption and political turmoil of his time.
According to the legend, the people of Chu state were distraught by Qu Yuan's death and wanted to honor his memory. They raced out in boats to save him, but it was too late. To prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body, they threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river. Additionally, they beat drums and chanted to scare away the fish and evil spirits.
Another popular story is that the Dragon Boat Festival was originally a harvest festival. It was believed that the dragon was a symbol of rain and fertility, and the festival was held to pray for a good harvest.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with various activities, including dragon boat races, eating zongzi, wearing a jade amulet, and hanging mugwort and calamus (a type of herb) around the home to ward off evil spirits. The festival is a time for family reunions, and it is also a symbol of national pride and cultural heritage in China.
