The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

According to legend, the festival originated from the Han Dynasty. It is said that during the reign of Emperor Hanmingdi, a celestial dog chased the moon, causing chaos. The emperor ordered lanterns to be lit all over the land to scare away the dog. Since then, lighting lanterns has become a custom during the festival.
Another story tells of a beautiful woman named Chang'e, who was banished to the moon after stealing the elixir of immortality. People believed that eating sweet rice balls, called "tangyuan," on the 15th day of the first lunar month would bring good luck and health.
Today, the Lantern Festival is celebrated with lantern displays, dragon and lion dances, and the eating of tangyuan. It is a time for families to gather and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
