**Origin:**

The festival has various legends, but the most widely accepted one is related to the moon. According to the story, during the Tang Dynasty, the Emperor Li Yu was defeated by the rebel leader Zhu Quan. The emperor, in a desperate attempt to save his kingdom, ordered the construction of a large, beautiful palace. The construction was completed in just one night, and the emperor was so grateful that he decreed the 15th day of the 8th lunar month as the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Another legend is about the moon goddess Chang'e, who was said to have swallowed an elixir of immortality and became a moon spirit. People celebrate the festival to honor her and to wish for a long life.

**Folk Customs:**

1. Mooncakes: The most iconic food of the Mid-Autumn Festival is mooncakes, round pastries filled with sweet or savory fillings. They symbolize reunion and completeness, as the round shape represents the moon.

2. Moon Viewing: Families gather to admire the full moon, which is considered the brightest and roundest of the year. They often enjoy mooncakes and tea while looking at the moon.

3. Lanterns: Red lanterns are hung in homes and public places to celebrate the festival. People also release lanterns into the sky, symbolizing their wishes and hopes.

4. Dragon and Lion Dances: In some areas, dragon and lion dances are performed to bring good fortune and驱邪 (drive away evil spirits).

5. Peking Opera: In some regions, Peking Opera performances are held to entertain people and celebrate the festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions, expressing gratitude, and wishing for a prosperous future. It is a time to appreciate the beauty of the moon and the harmony of nature.
