**The Legend of the Lantern Festival**

Long ago in ancient China, there lived a fearsome beast known as the Nian. The Nian would come out every New Year's Eve to eat the villagers and cause chaos. No one dared to venture out during this time, and the village was left in despair.

One year, a wise old man named Hongjun thought of a way to scare the Nian away. He learned that the beast feared the sound of the锣 (gong) and the light of lanterns. So, he came up with a plan.

On the eve of the New Year, Hongjun and the villagers lit hundreds of lanterns all around the village and hung red lanterns on their doors and windows. They played the锣 (gong) and cymbals, making loud noises to drive the Nian away.

As the beast approached the village, it was frightened by the bright lights and the loud sounds. The Nian fled in terror, never to return. The villagers were overjoyed and celebrated their victory by eating mooncakes and burning paper lanterns.

To ensure the Nian would never come back, the villagers decided to celebrate the New Year for a full 15 days. They named this celebration the Lantern Festival, which takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It became a tradition to light lanterns, eat mooncakes, and enjoy the festivities in honor of Hongjun's bravery and the defeat of the Nian.

The story of the Lantern Festival has been passed down through generations, reminding people of the importance of unity, bravery, and the joy of celebrating life together. And so, every year, the festival lights up the hearts of people across China with its beautiful lanterns and festive spirit.
