**Origins:**

The origin of the Spring Festival can be traced back to the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC). At that time, people celebrated the new year by sacrificing animals and offering prayers to the gods. Over time, these practices evolved, and the festival gradually became more festive and widespread.

**Legends and Stories:**

1. **Nian (年兽) - The Monster of the New Year:**

The most famous legend associated with the Spring Festival is about a monster called Nian. According to the story, Nian was a fearsome beast that attacked villages on New Year's Eve. The villagers were terrified of Nian and had to hide in their homes. However, one year, a wise old man came to the village and taught the people to use red paper, bamboo sticks, and loud noises to scare Nian away. Since then, red decorations and loud noises have become common customs during the Spring Festival.

2. **Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝) - The God of the Heavens:**

Another legend is about the Jade Emperor, who rules over the heavens. According to the story, once every year, the Jade Emperor allows the gods to visit the world for one day. This day is the Spring Festival. During this time, people should be kind and respectful to their ancestors, as well as to each other, to ensure a good year ahead.

3. **King Mu (穆天子) - The Legend of the Golden Tortoise:**

King Mu was a legendary king from the Western Zhou Dynasty. According to a story, he encountered a golden tortoise with an ancient book that contained wisdom and knowledge. This event is believed to have led to the development of various customs and rituals during the Spring Festival, such as the burning of incense, offering food to the gods, and lighting fireworks.

4. **Beggar's Festival:**

The Spring Festival also has a connection to the Chinese tradition of Buddhism. It is believed that on the first day of the new year, the Buddha came down to the world and transformed into a beggar. All the gods and spirits followed him, offering him food and clothes. This is why it is considered good fortune to give alms to beggars during the Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival is a time of joy, celebration, and the gathering of family. It is filled with customs and traditions that reflect the rich cultural heritage of China and its people.
