The Legend of Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival, also known as the Yuanxiao Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, which usually falls in February. This festival has a rich history and a beautiful legend associated with it.
The legend goes back to the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BC) when a tyrant named King You ruled the country. King You was known for his arrogance and cruelty. He built a palace for himself filled with luxury and indulgence, and he loved music and dancing above all else.
However, King You was also known for his laziness and lack of interest in governing the country. He ignored the needs of his people and was constantly neglecting his duties. The people were suffering under his rule, and they longed for a hero who could save them from the tyrant's grip.
In response to the people's plight, a dragon spirit appeared. This dragon spirit took the form of a wise and kind-hearted man named Jie Zitui. Jie Zitui was known for his bravery and his love for the people. He decided to challenge King You and restore peace to the land.
To do this, Jie Zitui climbed the Mount Tai, the highest mountain in China, and declared war on King You. The battle was fierce, but Jie Zitui emerged victorious. He defeated King You and saved the people from their oppressive ruler.
However, after the battle, Jie Zitui was too exhausted to return to his family. The people were grateful to Jie Zitui for saving them, but they were also saddened by his departure. The people wanted to show their gratitude, so they decided to celebrate his victory with a festival.
The festival became known as the Lantern Festival, as the people lit lanterns in the evening to honor Jie Zitui. They believed that the light from the lanterns would guide Jie Zitui back to his family in the afterlife. The lanterns also symbolized the victory over King You and the light of hope for a better future.
Today, the Lantern Festival is celebrated by lighting lanterns, eating yuanxiao (sweet rice balls), and watching lantern shows. It is a time for families to gather and enjoy each other's company, and for people to reflect on the values of love, kindness, and bravery that the festival represents.
