**Qu Yuan's Story:**

Qu Yuan was a talented and patriotic poet and statesman during the Warring States period (475-221 BC) in ancient China. He was known for his loyalty to the state and his efforts to reform the government. However, he was eventually exiled due to political intrigue and corruption.

While in exile, Qu Yuan wrote many poems expressing his sorrow and patriotism. His most famous work is the "Li Sao," which translates to "The Lament." During his time away from the court, he witnessed the suffering of the people and the decline of his beloved country.

According to legend, on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River, in protest of the corruption and the state's decline. The local people were in great sorrow upon hearing the news and rushed to the river to search for his body. They also threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body.

To honor Qu Yuan and his sacrifice, the people began to hold dragon boat races and throw rice dumplings into the river every year on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. This is how the Dragon Boat Festival came to be.

**Other Legends:**

There are other legends associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, including:

- The "Five毒" (Five Poisons): It is believed that the festival originated from the practice of avoiding the "Five Poisons" (heat, dampness, wind, cold, and dryness) during the summer months. People would wear incense, drink tea, and eat rice dumplings to ward off evil spirits and diseases.

- The "Bamboo Zither": Some legends say that Qu Yuan played the bamboo zither while floating on the river. After his death, people would play the bamboo zither in his memory.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for Chinese people to remember and honor the bravery and loyalty of Qu Yuan, as well as to celebrate the spirit of unity and cooperation that is represented by the dragon boat races.
