The Origin of New Year's Eve: A Brief Story

Long ago in ancient China, there was a fierce beast called the Nian, which terrorized villages and stole people's livestock and children. The villagers were scared and helpless, living in constant fear.
One year, a wise old man noticed the Nian's weakness: it feared red colors, firecrackers, and loud noises. So, the villagers came together to devise a plan to scare the Nian away.
On the evening of the last day of the year, they lit bonfires, set off firecrackers, and painted their homes and themselves in red. They danced and made loud noises, making the Nian so afraid that it ran back into the mountains, never to return.
This day became known as New Year's Eve, a time for joy, celebration, and reunion. It is believed that by doing the same things on this night, the villagers can ward off evil and welcome the New Year with good luck and prosperity.
