**Origin:**

The festival's origins can be traced back to the ancient Chinese legend of the cowherd and the weaver girl. According to the story, Niu Lang, a cowherd, and Zhi Nu, a weaver girl, were separated by the Milky Way River after being married. The only time they could meet was on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, when magpies would form a bridge across the river for them. This day is now celebrated as the Qixi Festival.

**Customs:**

1. **Star Gazing:** On the evening of the festival, people look at the stars Vega and Altair, which are believed to be the cowherd and the weaver girl in the sky. They also make wishes for love and happiness.

2. **Bamboo and Red Thread:** Young women traditionally hang red threads or strings on bamboo branches in the hope of finding a good husband. They also write their names on the threads and tie them around their wrists, believing it will bring them a loving partner.

3. **Making and Offering Ripe Fruits:** In some regions, people make offerings of ripe fruits like peaches, pears, and melons to the weaver girl, hoping for her favor and a happy marriage.

4. **Eating Qixi Noodles:** In some areas, eating long noodles on this day is considered auspicious. The noodles symbolize longevity and happiness in marriage.

5. **Qixi Opera:** Traditional Qixi operas are performed in some places, telling the story of the cowherd and the weaver girl.

6. **Gift-giving:** Couples often exchange gifts on this day, symbolizing their love and affection.

The Qixi Festival is a time for people to celebrate love, express their wishes for a happy future, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. It is a blend of romantic customs, traditional beliefs, and cultural heritage that continues to be celebrated in various forms across China and among Chinese communities worldwide.
