**Time:**

The Dragon Boat Festival is always on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, which varies each year in the Gregorian calendar.

**Festival Customs:**

1. Dragon Boat Races: The most famous custom of the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. Teams of rowers compete in long boats shaped like dragons, while a drummer and a flag bearer lead the way. This tradition is believed to honor the poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the river to protest corruption.

2. Eating Zongzi: Zongzi, also known as sticky rice dumplings, are a traditional food associated with the Dragon Boat Festival. They are made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings, such as red bean paste, meat, or dates, and wrapped in bamboo leaves. Eating zongzi is believed to ward off evil spirits and to keep the soul of Qu Yuan safe.

3. Hanging Calamus and Mugwort: It is a custom to hang the leaves of calamus and mugwort around the home or in the clothing. These plants are believed to ward off insects and evil spirits.

4. Wearing Periwinkle: People often wear periwinkle flowers, which are thought to have medicinal properties and are believed to protect against diseases.

5. Drinking Realgar Wine: In some regions, people drink realgar wine, which is made with realgar, a toxic mineral. It is believed that drinking this wine can prevent illness and promote health.

**Origins:**

The Dragon Boat Festival has its origins in the memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period of ancient China. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who was exiled by the king of the Chu state due to political intrigue. Feeling despair over the state of his country, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. The local people raced out in boats to save him, but it was too late. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice dumplings into the river. This is how the Dragon Boat Festival and the custom of eating zongzi originated.
