The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, has its origins in ancient China. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the first lunar month, marking the end of the New Year celebrations.

Legend has it that the festival dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – 9 AD). According to a story, the Emperor Han Wudi (r. 141-87 BC) was so grateful for the help of a celestial dog that he ordered lanterns to be lit in the sky to honor it. Since then, lighting lanterns has become a tradition to celebrate the festival.
Another tale is about a beautiful woman named Yuanxiao, who was said to have saved the people from a great disaster. The people built a temple in her honor and lit lanterns to show their gratitude. This event eventually evolved into the Lantern Festival.
