**Origins:**

The Mid-Autumn Festival has a long history, with its roots dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). However, the festival's origins can be traced even further back to the ancient Chinese practice of observing the moon's cycles. It was believed that the moon was at its fullest and brightest on this day, symbolizing completeness and harmony.

**Legends:**

There are several legends associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival, but the most famous one is about the Moon Goddess, Chang'e.

**The Legend of Chang'e:**

According to the story, there was a celestial herb called the "Pill of Immortality" that could grant eternal life to anyone who consumed it. The Emperor of the Heavens, worried that the pill would fall into the wrong hands, decided to hide it on the moon. He tasked his most loyal minister, Hou Yi, with retrieving it.

Hou Yi successfully obtained the pill but was pursued by the nine suns that had been unleashed upon the earth. To escape, he shot eight of the suns, leaving only one to provide light for the world. In gratitude, the Emperor granted Hou Yi the Pill of Immortality.

However, Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e, was not aware of the pill's power. One day, while Hou Yi was away, Chang'e accidentally swallowed the pill. As a result, she was lifted into the sky and became the Moon Goddess.

Since then, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated to honor Chang'e and the beauty of the moon. It is a time for families to gather, share mooncakes, and admire the full moon together.

In summary, the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month to mark the full moon, symbolizing completeness and harmony. The festival's origins can be traced back to ancient Chinese practices, and its most famous legend is about the Moon Goddess, Chang'e.
