The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its history dates back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC).

According to a popular legend, the festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman during the Chu Kingdom. Qu Yuan was known for his loyalty to his kingdom and his efforts to reform its political system. When he was exiled, he was deeply distressed by the state of his country. On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, he drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against the corruption and decline of his kingdom.
To honor Qu Yuan's memory, the people of Chu Kingdom held a dragon boat race on the river. They also threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. These rice dumplings are now known as zongzi, the traditional food of the Dragon Boat Festival.
Another story associated with the Dragon Boat Festival is the tale of Empress Wu Zetian. It is said that during her reign, she was so impressed by the dragon boat races that she decreed the 5th day of the 5th lunar month as a public holiday.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated in various ways across China and other Asian countries. Dragon boat races, eating zongzi, and hanging mugwort and calamus (a type of Chinese herb) are some of the most common activities. The festival also symbolizes the spirit of unity, bravery, and loyalty.
