Another important custom is eating zongzi, a sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. These dumplings come in various shapes and fillings, symbolizing the protection of Qu Yuan's body from the fish in the river. It is believed that eating zongzi can ward off evil spirits and diseases.

On the day of the festival, people also hang calamus leaves and mugwort around their homes to ward off insects and evil spirits. They may also wear a medicinal bag containing herbs to protect against illness.
