The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. It has a long history and is filled with various customs and activities across different regions in China. Here is an introduction to some of the customs of the Dragon Boat Festival in various parts of China.

1. Dragon Boat Racing

The most famous custom of the Dragon Boat Festival is dragon boat racing. This activity originated in the memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period. People in many regions, such as Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi, participate in dragon boat races. The boats are shaped like dragons and are decorated with dragon motifs. Teams of rowers compete to be the first to cross the finish line, while drummers and flag bearers encourage them.

2. Eating Zongzi

Zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings, is another essential custom of the Dragon Boat Festival. These dumplings are made with glutinous rice, bamboo leaves, and various fillings, such as red bean paste, meat, or egg. People in different regions have their unique variations of Zongzi. For example, in Hunan, people prefer to eat Zongzi with a savory meat filling, while in Zhejiang, sweet red bean paste is the favorite.

3. Hanging Calamus and Mugwort

In some regions, people hang calamus and mugwort around their homes to ward off evil spirits and diseases. These plants are believed to have strong aromatic properties that can protect the household from misfortune. In some places, people also wear calamus and mugwort on their wrists as bracelets for the same purpose.

4. Wearing a Five-Color Thread Bracelet

Another custom is to wear a five-color thread bracelet. This bracelet is made of five different colored threads, each representing one of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. It is believed that wearing this bracelet can bring good luck and protect against evil spirits.

5. Listening to the Story of Qu Yuan

In some regions, people gather to listen to the story of Qu Yuan, the poet who drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against corruption. The story is told to remind people of the importance of loyalty, integrity, and patriotism.

6. Dragon Boat Festival in Different Regions

- Hunan: Dragon boat racing is particularly popular in Hunan. The Hunanese Zongzi is known for its savory meat filling, and the people there also have a unique custom of eating "five-fruit" Zongzi, which includes fruits like lychee, longan, and persimmon.

- Zhejiang: In Zhejiang, people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival by eating sweet red bean paste Zongzi and watching dragon boat races. They also have a custom of making "five-fruit" cakes, which are similar to Zongzi but made with fruits instead of meat.

- Guangdong: In Guangdong, people enjoy dragon boat racing, eating Zongzi, and hanging calamus and mugwort. They also have a custom of making "five-fruit" candies, which are a sweet treat made with fruits and nuts.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for people to come together, celebrate their culture, and honor their ancestors. These various customs and activities reflect the rich diversity of Chinese culture and its deep roots in history.
