The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Its origins date back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC).

The festival is primarily commemorated in memory of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman who lived during the late Warring States period. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister to the king of the Chu state. However, he was betrayed and exiled by the king due to political intrigue. In despair, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
To honor Qu Yuan and prevent fish from eating his body, local people raced dragon boats and threw zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) into the river. The dragon boat races have since become a major activity during the festival.
Other customs associated with the Dragon Boat Festival include:
1. Eating zongzi: Zongzi are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of glutinous rice and various fillings, such as red bean paste, meat, or egg. They are wrapped in bamboo leaves and tied with string.
2. Wearing驱邪香囊 (xuexie xiangnang): These are small bags filled with aromatic herbs and spices, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
3. Painting the face with realgar: Some people paint their faces with realgar, a red mineral, to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
4. Hanging calamus leaves and mugwort: These are believed to have protective properties and are often hung in homes or worn as necklaces.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for family reunions, enjoying traditional foods, and participating in various cultural activities. It is celebrated not only in China but also in other countries with a significant Chinese population, such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
