**The Story of Qu Yuan:**

Qu Yuan was a renowned statesman and poet during the Warring States period (475-221 BC) in ancient China. He was a loyal minister to the king of the state of Chu. However, he was falsely accused and exiled after he advised the king against a proposed alliance with another state.

During his exile, Qu Yuan composed many patriotic poems expressing his sorrow for his country's plight and his love for his people. In 278 BC, when the state of Chu was defeated by the state of Qin, Qu Yuan's despair turned to绝望. He plunged himself into the Miluo River in the southern part of China to end his life.

To prevent fish from eating his body, the people threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river. They also raced boats, known as dragon boats, to save him. The belief is that the dragon boats chased after Qu Yuan, and the rice dumplings helped to deter the fish.

**The Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival:**

The Dragon Boat Festival has since become a day to honor Qu Yuan and his contributions to Chinese culture. It is a time for commemorating his loyalty, love for his country, and his poetic legacy. People also use this occasion to express their respect for other patriotic figures and their cultural heritage.

The festival is marked by various customs, including:

- Eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), which symbolize the rice dumplings thrown into the river.

- Racing dragon boats, a tradition to honor the efforts of those who tried to save Qu Yuan.

- Wearing驱邪 (fu ling) or perfume bags to ward off evil spirits.

- Hanging mugwort leaves and calamus roots around the home to prevent insects and pests.

The Dragon Boat Festival is a vibrant and important celebration in Chinese culture, reminding people of the past and the enduring spirit of loyalty, patriotism, and tradition.
